Weekend Reads: Wylie Dufresne, Darth Pooh & Sexy Hangouts

July 19, 2013 Alejandra Owens
2013-07-12-17-52-10.jpg

Belly Up It's hot as balls here - actually, we're in the midst of an official heat wave. Even Boston is hotter than DC, and that's saying a lot! My goal for the weekend: stay cool and read a lot. I've been accumulating a stack of books to read since the beginning of the year, but haven't made any real dent in them. Also, I need to just accept that George R. R. Martin might never finish the A Song of Ice and Fire series and just finish book 5 once and for all. (I've been reading a few pages here and there to make it last longer. I'm silly, I know.) I'm gonna go find myself a mojito now, y'all can keep on reading...

Wylie Dufresne has opened a new restaurant in NYC called Alder. This video of the work they're doing instantly sold me on the place, and reminded me of the El Bulli documentary, Cooking In Progress. Both are worth the watch.

22 things most DC people do. Sadly, yes. It's true.

Need to cancel a wedding? Apparently there's a business that'll help you do that.

Blaming everything on our mothers is practically an American pastime, no? But what happens when your mother says she's "fat, ugly and horrible"?

I'm a Joss Whedon fan for sure. A peek into his mind shows how he approaches getting shit done, and rewarding himself in the process.

What if Winnie The Pooh did a Darth Vader impression? No need to guess.

Elizabeth Gilbert's 7 word autobiography might as well be my own too.

10 minutes of the world's longest domino toppling will put you in a zen-like trance.

This made me feel better about being a generational "cusper." Stuck between Gen X and Millenials.

Shameless plug: I hosted AARP's first ever Google Hangout! And it was about dating, love and...sex! Don't worry, it's safe for work, but we do get honest!

PBS New York dreamt up some horrible, and fake, reality shows - with trailers too!

12 things happy people do differently.

BREAKING: Firefly, Joss Whedon's one-season cult classic show, is getting it's own online RPG game. Well, shoot! As Kaylee would say.

Ciara's new album has been on steady rotation for me the last couple weeks. Livin' It Up is one of a couple dance-y tracks that necessitate getting up or doing some hard core chair dancing. Below is just a snippet of the song, but it's totally worth the download on iTunes. Jam on lovahs!

The Art Of Happiness

July 15, 2013 Alejandra Owens
12-things-happy-people-do-differently.jpg

12 Things Happy People Do Differently I have a little list. It's a list of things I know will make me happy. Sometimes it's a dish, a drink, a friend, a place or a workout - whatever it might be, when I'm having a rough day I go through my list of things that can help turn it around.

I saw this list and considered for a moment, how many of those things are actually good for me? How many of the things on my list are productive? Do those things move me forward, or simply distract me? I think there's a time and place for both - forward motion/growth and distractions. Not every sad, or simply down, moment calls for a super serious tone or response, obviously.

No matter what's on my list, or yours, I am thinking about how to better nurture myself through difficult moments. I'm big on doling out big doses of tough love to myself, so I forget to be a little more tender or thoughtful at times. Being happy isn't a science, it's an art. And for each of us the precise combination of things is different, and it changes...sometimes frequently even.

Do the 12 things above resonate with you? I'd, predictably, like to add: #13 Eat & Drink Well.

Weekend Reads: Irish Good Byes, Rosé & DC Pride

July 12, 2013 Alejandra Owens
2012-09-29-16-01-32.jpg

Bourbon Between a long weekend and a five day pilates bootcamp I'm feeling relaxed, a smidge healthier and firmly planted in the middle of summer. For locals, I'm a huge fan of Fuse Pilates studio  - their pricing is just right and their classes are amazing. The bootcamp was just the jumpstart I needed to get my butt into gear. If only I didn't love wine so much, but, more on that later. I'm going to spend the weekend with my tender muscles, recovering, reading and catching up on my shows - perfect rainy weather activities! Let's get this party started though, here's some links to jumpstart your weekend and get your jam on!

Science is mesmerizing sometimes. String of beads + jar + gravity = whoa.

Who eats the best in Game of Thrones? I don't know if I agree. Dorne seems like it's got some good grub.

My ex was the master of Irish goodbyes. I didn't realize however, that it's kind of a "thing."

Don't understand the whole "speakeasy" thing? This handy translator breaks it down for you.

Bacon weave Elvis sandwich. Just...no. Stop.

Go to: vogue.co.uk Then Konami code: Up up, down down, left, right, left, right, b, a, Enter. Hilarity ensues. (h/t Peter Shankman)

Nerd tears: Felicia Day's internet prolific YouTube show, The Guild, comes to an end after six fun-filled seasons.

A rosé guide that owns all rosé guides.

Knocking Yelp reviews is a somewhat tired pastime, but this take down is epic. And dotted with just the right amount of bitchy side commentary.

American wineries, visualized. God, we're a bunch of boozers.

Proof positive that you can learn to do anything if you put your mind to it: this gal taught herself to dance in a year.

Wearing your 80 hour work week as a badge of honor is so out. Just because you're working a lot, doesn't mean you're working smart.

Got a disgruntled employee or teammate? Here's three reasons she might be frustrated.

20 ways to hit on women. Spoiler: be a decent human being with manners and common sense.

The New York Times loves bashing on DC's food scene. But when The Washington Post did it I went apoplectic. Jessica Sidman over at Washington City Paper said everything I wanted to and more.

I've been jamming to ZZ Ward a lot lately - good #GSD jams with funky beats, and that husky voice...man! Enjoy your weekend lovahs!

Weekend Reads: Excess, Mansplaining & Twitter Rants

June 28, 2013 Alejandra Owens
2013-06-16-10-04-33-2.jpg

Tied Shirt Talk about poor planning, lovahs. Summer crept up on me and I totally forgot to reserve myself some beach houses and book some trips so I could get out of dodge and rest my eyes on an oceanic horizon. Now I'm feeling all trapped in the city and kinda sad about. It'll take some creativity but I'm determined to get myself to the beach somehow! *shakes fist*

While I get crafty, you should check out these links! This week's reads are sexy, nerdy and political...all at the same time. Read on...

If the majority of young people are learning about sex from porn, what does that mean for sex in our society? Cindy Gallop is on it with Make Love Not Porn.

Indie Alaska, a YouTube short series from PBS Digital Studios, has a Juno meets Napoleon Dynamite feel and is just fascinating.

I want this dress but it's white and I like pasta.

This quote about excess really resonated with me.

The Arizona girl in me wants the aloe prints. Badly.

Want to know your current salary in Silver Stags aka Game of Thrones money? There's a converter for that.

If you love rap like I do, but are totally disenchanted with the crap coming out over the last decade, Killer Mike's new album will make you happy. It's available for free download.

Ever have a guy explain something to you like you don't have a brain? It's called "mansplaining" and dudes, it's gotta stop. My favorite quote from the article:

But explaining men still assume I am, in some sort of obscene impregnation metaphor, an empty vessel to be filled with their wisdom and knowledge.

Are you a geek? Or a nerd? Geek, nerd? Nerd, geek? Another chart to help you figure it out.

As a single lady, I found this list of 8 reasons straight men don't want to get married really concerning. And short-sighted. Guys, companionship!? Hello?!

The three types of appetite - yes, it all goes back to food and sex eventually.

I had never heard of the UpStairs Lounge massacre, but it brought tears to my eyes. Especially during such a historic week for LGBT issues.

I really adore my friend Liz. She ranted/pontificated on what's wrong with the Republican party on Twitter this week and, just...*slow clap*.

This week's song seems appropriate for a hot, sticky summer weekend. Try to stay cool lovahs!

Weekend Reads: Khaleesi Braids, Craft Beer & Salinger

June 21, 2013 Alejandra Owens
2013-06-08-17-25-00-2.jpg

Summer Outfit How is it June already? I'm looking back at the previous six months and I'm thinking, "Where the hell was I?!" Which makes me want to jam in as much summer fun as I can - grilling pizzas, rooftop wine nights and some long walks that end at the Spanish Steps here in DC. I'm going to get to it, starting with some pool time later today - what are you up to this weekend?

I love documentaries so this one on J.D. Salinger looks fascinating.

I've yet to get fully interested in Reddit but following these sub-reddits seems like a good start.

Oh goodness, it's raining on my face.

Sarah Silverman, I love you. Shit's about to not get crazy.

Pancake juggling. It's a thing.

Chefs read their own shitty Yelp reviews. Not as funny as celebs reading tweets about themselves, but still pretty good.

A map of craft beer could be your new drinking guide for the summer!

Shopping for bras and undies is hard enough, but lingerie? This woman's hilarious account of shopping for the sexy bits at 65 had me belly laughing.

ProTip: Stop calling yourself a freelancer writer. Time to PR that title a bit and get yourself more money, and marketability.

Is it time to get rid of tipping? Read before you freak out...

The best braids from Game of Thrones. Le sigh. I can barely do a basic braid!

And Emilia Clarke (aka Khaleesi) is the sweetest! (h/t Cecelia)

A chart on disagreement. I like the explanation for name calling.

This is how a standard key lock works. Don't know why, that GIF has me mesmerized.

July 1st Google turns off Reader :( Feedly is where I've landed and you need to do a little pre-work to get ready for the switch!

Your weekend jam comes to us from my friend Josh (who's infinitely cooler than me when it comes to music). Enjoy your weekend lovahs!

Weekend Reads: Aunt Jackie, White Wine & Fairy Tales

June 14, 2013 Alejandra Owens
2013-04-08-18-46-07.jpg

2013-04-08 18.46.07 Can I get an AMEN! for some TGIF action today? Seriously, it's beautiful in DC today (hope it's beautiful wherever you are too) and the weekend is looking it'll be a low key, relaxing one too! Not much sarcastic commentary or work travel whining to do this week so let's get to the good stuff! Weekend reads...

I can't believe someone thinks Game of Thrones is better on TV. Um. No.

Brian Williams is a BAMF and Jimmy Fallon's remix of Williams' newscasts into "Ain't Nuthin' But A G Thang" solidifies that.

Got some liquid oxygen and hot charcoal laying around? Me neither, but check out what happens when you put them together! (Side note: Dude's hair. Wow.)

If you ever walk by the corner of 7th and E St NW in DC you know Ivory Wilson. But this profile peels back the layers of this gregarious DC institution.

Vine is being used for a lot of things, but this guy's real-time showing of how bad it hurts to wax various body parts had me rolling.

Innovation and cultural/moral norms are an odd pairing, but here's the story of why we have applicator tampons. Whoever thought we'd enjoy this shit was a delusional, delusional person.

What if Game of Thrones season three finale was played out on Facebook? (Look for the little details there - it's where all teh funny is!)

Six fairy tales for the modern woman.

We can't imagine anyone else playing Snape or Allie Calhoun (The Notebook) but look who almost got the part!

All white wine is not created equal. Here's a handy chart to map out your favorite flavor profiles and dominate any wine list!

For DCers - 10 ways you know you're a diehard foodie. From my hilarious and spot-on friend Nevin Martell.

This relationship advice was a little gut-punchy, realistic and also a fabulous reminder to live in the moment - for so many reasons.

During a giggly afternoon I came upon this and it made me laugh. It makes no sense, I know.

Hipsters who dress like Aunt Jackie.

Best computer background ever? I say yes.

Alright, I'm off, lovahs. Here's a slow jam to ease you into this weekend.

Weekend Reads: Creepy Kids, Dating PR Girls & Alexis Madrigal

May 31, 2013 Alejandra Owens
2013-05-30-17-40-35.jpg

Weekend To Dos I've pushed my brain to the max. A lot of travel, fun-but-keeping-me-up-late plans and not nearly enough sleep has me feeling a homebody/lazy urge something strong. Now that the weather has taken on a more summer-like temperature, I must, must, must be outside this weekend but only if I'm sprawled out laying down reading a book. While I say I don't "tan" anymore, soaking up some rays in an effort to be something darker than paper white is indeed a goal. I'll double apply my SPF and call it even, k?

As I tick off my to do list I'll be Instagraming up a storm so give me a follow if you want some farmers market porn and summer inspired shots. What are y'all up to this weekend? If you're being lazy like me, you'll love the weekend reads - seriously good stuff in here this week...

I love dining alone, but haven't yet mentally girded my loins for the idea of traveling alone.

Whoa! Cool! A volcano erupting on one of Jupiter's moons.

Guys, I'm concerned. Who knew killer whales were such assholes!?

I have such an internet crush on Alexis Madrigal, tech writer at The Atlantic, cutie pie and all around awesome person to follow. No surprise that his advice to writers is sage and comforting.

5 fashion commandments I'll keep in mind when I'm cleaning out my closet this weekend.

There's something sexy but still awwww cute! about this photographer's project: his girlfriend guides him through world travels, sweetly.

Shameless self promotion: working with mean girls sucks, but it's totally doable. And character building.

This marriage advice actually seems practical.

I love this metaphor for why it can be so difficult for women in tech to reach the top. Seriously, running up the down escalator sucks. I've done it.

Is break up in a box the new pint of ice cream?

Local gripe: wtf is up with these insane waits at restaurans on 14th St!? Absurdity.

Oh. Cringe. If texting is the new email, like hell I want work texting me instead of emailing. Because email is where ideas go to die.

Summertime real talk: my thighs touch and therefor chafing is a problem. Capitol Hill style runs through the options to prevent it.

Love this list of 7 things guys need to know about dating PR girls. #3, ahem. Yeah.

To top off the week, lovahs, let's have a laugh over the funny shit kids say. We already know they're creepy sometimes, but then there's this:

Weekend Reads: F. Scott Fitzgerald's Junk, Feminism & Girls In Bathrooms

May 24, 2013 Alejandra Owens
2012-07-23-10-48-13.jpg

Rehoboth Beach, DE This is gonna be a brief, and admittedly weak weekend reads lovahs! I got back from another mess of travel on Wednesday (what a mess it was too!) and y'all are headed off for BBQs and beaches and vacations so, let's get real, you probably won't be reading much this weekend. Me? I'll be staycationing, drinking a lot of rosé and hopefully getting some sun. Dear Mother Nature, Please turn the DC weather around for me! <3 Alejandra.

Whatever you guys end up doing, have fun! And Christ almighty, be safe!

It was a big week for social/media - what with Yahoo! buying Tumblr and all. Oh and Flickr revamped itself...and then died.

See? See why I love Midnight In Paris? Because I want to be friends with Hemingway and Fitzgerald! They make fun of each other's junk and write funny notes in their manuscripts!

I know print is dying, but jesus, Robert Sietsema, restaurant critic and all around amazing food-as-cultural-marker writer for The Village Voice was laid off.

So funny because it's so true: things girls say to each other in the bathroom.

20-somethings. Don't waste away your 20s. I completely agree with this TED Talk.

This poignant speech about why we still need feminism made me tear up.

Chris Christie, get your state's shit together. I might not like scotch, but still!

Alright, that's all I have for now. Next week should be fun - I have a #GSD post about mean girls and with me catching up on my Feedly and Instapaper there will be much to share! Here's a cheeky jam from She & Him to start your long weekend lovahs!

Weekend Reads: She-Ra, Mentors & John Krasinski

May 17, 2013 Alejandra Owens
2012-11-21-16-20-53.jpg

Beach Know what I need? That. I need a beach. I need the rhythmic slosh of water rolling up on the beach. Like a baby with one of those sound machines, I'll be out like a light. This week has been more jet setting, ending with some family time. Much needed family time. Along the way I've met fun people, smart people, annoying people and everything in between which is always great.

Perhaps the best part of going home is hugs from my mother, but then there's the animals. If you know me you've probably heard my description of the symphony of sounds I wake up to (usually way too early) when I'm back at home. First it starts with a consistent thudding of Big Dog's (he's almost 100lbs) tail, followed by a slightly less dense thudding of Small Dog's (he's only 25lbs) tail beating on the wall of the hallway (conveniently situated by the door to my room). They're so excited to see everyone awake! Hello! I haven't seen you in hours! It's YOU!! Then it's our two parakeets, Mr. Blue and Jasper, squawking to greet my father who they have imprinted on. All this goes on for the next hour or so making it nearly impossible to ignore and thus, nearly impossible to sleep in. If I can snap pics of these beasts, I will. But for now, on to the links...

Embracing who you are is hard enough in life, but coming out (and being an athlete to boot) adds another layer. Such an endearing young man with a powerful perspective.

Girls need role models, and not of the Disney princess variety.

This had me in stitches: I Tried Gwyneth Paltrow's Diet...And I Got A Rash On My Face.

For men (and women): a guide to communicating your needs in a relationship. Please people, figure this out asap. Makes it easier for all of us.

The 7 minute workout. I will be trying this...clearly.

Ryan Gosling never gets old.

10 banned music videos...from the days when MTV played music videos.

Fast forward to 2:14 and be a happier person. John Krasinski is a stud.

Could this be the perfect summer drink? Orange Basil Mojitos.

Do you love technology? Want a fresh, honest take on all aspect of the subject? Then check out Lady Bits.

We all get that itch. The itch to find a new gig. Here's how to figure out if you're in a good job.

Kylie Minogue as She-Ra. That is all.

Gizoogle.net - search your Twitter account, lose 20 minutes of your day. I especially liked my new bio.

Interstellar memes. (God, I love XKCD.)

Fellow The Li.st-er Meredith Fineman lays down some real talk about finding a mentor. Should you use the dreaded "m word"? Do you even need a mentor? What does having a mentor even mean!?

I'm hoping to drag my parents to Star Trek: Into The Darkness this weekend. I'm prepping by reading any and all Star Trek articles I can find.

50 blogging tips from local blogger Michelle, aka Hey Love.

Game of Brands. Game of Thrones houses as modern day companies.

Have a great weekend, lovahs! I'll leave you with this Anthropology video. Ever wonder what goes into making those beautiful window displays? This video confirms I'll never been a DIYer.

Weekend Reads: Bergdorf, Asparagus and Dragon Eggs

May 10, 2013 Alejandra Owens
dragon-egg.jpg

Dragon Egg Behold. My obsession with Game of Thrones, now firmly displayed on my desk at work! I've raved about the books for so long (and so adamantly) that my friend Cecelia ended up reading them and loving them just as much. Our shared obsession with Jon Snow and all things Westeros meant receiving a dragon egg (official Game of Thrones merch, btw) for my birthday! Of course I loved it the moment I saw it, but then I got to work and realized it also matched my Rifle Paper Co. coasters, well, magine that moment of excitement!

Despite being a pleasantly slow week, I'm exhausted. I'm looking forward to sleeping in and going to the 14th & U farmers market for some produce. I have an occasion to do some cooking for on Monday and I'm thinking I may go all out! Or I'll just serve cheese (the best damn cheese!) and crackers. We'll see. But, on to the weekend reads....

Reporters without borders has a brilliant new ad campaign. Let's just say there's a lot of...the finger...involved.

Scatter My Ashes At Bergdorf looks like the next best fashion documentary since September Issue!

2013-04-26-10-37-55.jpg

Stumptown Coffee The last couple weeks have been a whirlwind of work and fun travel. In two weeks I hit four cities in two, or was it three?, time zones. I always crave some time on the road. I want to leave my routine and my every day. Then, once I'm packing or in line at the airport, all I want is my big, comfy bed back. Am I the only one who does silly things like this? Either way, I got to mash some very cool work related talks and meetups with a family visit and some birthday time in Portland, OR! I ate and drank and laughed my ass off and reflected a bit.

Since I didn't post while I was jumping from city to city I have so many cool links to share with you guys. Next week I'm back on a normal schedule and I have some great posts in queue - you'll have to let me know what you think!

A really nerdy look at Game of Thrones: why the Tyrells are richer than the Lannisters.

What was your first concert? Oh. Mine was NSYNC. *dodges flying tomatoes*

This blogger helps you determine whether or not you're a foodie. I say, who the fuck wants to be called a foodie?

Lady nerds are the real heroes.

paidContent Live: Where Were The Women?

April 21, 2013 Alejandra Owens
paidcontent-live-panel.jpg

paidContent Live panel Last week I attended paidContent Live, a GigaOM event, in New York City. The conference, focused on tackling the very big, very sexy topic of how to create sustainable models of monetizing, distributing and creating content. When I registered in February I took a look at the speaker list - noting heavy hitters like David Karp, Andrew Ross Sorkin and John Steinberg. I also noted, a speaker list that was, at the time, 80% male.

I wanted to give the conference organizers the benefit of the doubt. With two months to go, maybe they were still working on shoring up panelists, and maybe those panelists would be women. However, when I showed up, that was very clearly not the case. The program for the event revealed that there were only five women speaking at the event. Five. At a nine hour event with over 40 speakers.

Using the event's official hashtag #pclive I, and others, broached the issue. Presumably conference organizers were monitoring the feed since several moderators and even the emcee for the event were encouraging attendees to "continue the conversation" and asked us to not "just share quotes, but explore other topics" on the feed. I quickly found that I wasn't alone - several attendees noted the lack of gender diversity on stage, and it wasn't just women. This is my storify of the conversation that happened on Twitter throughout the day:

[View the story "paidContent Live: Where Were The Women? " on Storify]

I'm writing this post for two reasons: 1. it's my open letter to the conference organizers , which I'll also send to them directly, and 2. to ask anyone who reads it to remember they can help make these conferences more diverse.

To the paidContent Live organizers:

Don't you think having a diverse group of panelists and moderators makes for a better discussion? Every time there was a woman on stage, she challenged the status quo in some way and offered an alternative view, or unique insight. That's not a coincidence.

Did you not consider that having a speaker list that was 90%+ white males might make women and minorities in the audience feel even slightly alienated? There were women in the audience, sure, but I couldn't help but note when I walked in to register that audience and speaker list alike were overwhelmingly homogenous. I consider myself a fairly confident person but let's just say, next year, I may be bringing back up.

What did your recruiting process look like for setting up panels? I'll give you the benefit of the doubt and assume you probably tried to get more women on stage. But only reaching out to your first, or even second, circle of contacts does not constitute trying. Give Lean In a read, I'll spare you the litany of statistics that show it may be harder to find outstanding women to discuss the topics you addressed last week. We're not exactly walking around tooting our horns and declaring ourselves experts

Lastly, if you're taking everything I, and others, have said to heart - we're also here to help. Talk to Rachel Sklar or Cindy Gallop, they'll hook you up with some smart sisters.

To conference attendees & speakers:

See something? Say something. A woman I met at paidContent Live told me that, while she noticed the gender disparity on stage, it simply didn't make her as angry as I was. She noted that this is how most conferences are, so she was just used to it. I had to point out, that while I was certainly stewing on it, I wasn't "angry." And that conferences would go on being that way if no one ever said anything, angry or not. Point out the lack of gender diversity in a tweet, to the registration desk or to the conference organizers - whatever forum you're most comfortable with.

Leverage your influence. At some point, many of us will be asked to sit on a panel at a conference - large or small. Take that moment to leverage the influence you have. Ask the conference organizer what the female to male ratio of speakers is. Ask them how they plan to recruit more women if things aren't looking so good. Tell them you'd love to speak on their panel, but you won't be able to do so unless a more concerted effort to recruit women is made, and that you can help them. Make your participation contingent upon more than a good faith effort.

Help organizers find smart, capable women by promoting smart, capable women. The number one thing people (including women) said to me at the conference was, "Maybe these were just the best people to discuss the topics. Maybe the women they found weren't as qualified." This is a laughably bad argument. In all of the world of blogging, publishing, marketing, advertising and communications, there are no women who are as qualified as the 40 some-odd male speakers I saw that day? Ah, no. Again, read Lean In for the litany of depressing stats about why women aren't the self-promotion machines men often are, but you can help a sister out. Send internal emails touting great projects/results yielded by women you work with. Tweet insightful articles written by women, tag those women in your tweets, and tag influential reporters/execs/organizers too! Use your Facebook feed to share initiatives and companies led by women with your friends. Let's squash this idea that there are no women who are as qualified as the most qualified man in any industry to sit on any panel.

I learned a lot at paidContent Live, and have even told my boss and other executives at AARP that they should attend next year. The topics discussed and the issues raised were, no doubt, incredibly valuable. But the glaring lack of diversity on stage that day distracted me somewhat, and I did feel the conversations would have been even better if there had been more diversity. Hopefully the organizers take the issue seriously and next year, they'll have an even better event for it.

Happy Birthday Mom!

balloon My mother doesn't read my blog. But I figured I'd post this all the same, in case she secretly googles for it late at night. (And if you know my mom, that's totally something she would do.)

31 years ago we started a journey together and she's never left my side. Never. Not even once. And for that I am eternally grateful.

Weekend Reads: Rude Hand Gestures & Well Dressed Animals

2013-04-10-10-33-26.jpg

Arizona My mom sent me this photo of an Arizona sunset from our back yard. It kinda sums up everything I love about the state, and definitely has me jonesin' for some home time. And some sun. And sleep. How about sleeping in the sun? Oh that's always the best. Basically I need summer. I'll eat those words in about three months, but whatever.

I'm on a mad travel dash next week, which will be so much fun and also so exhausting. I have my Instapaper loaded up with about a million articles to read, and a crap ton of Doctor Who, Fringe and Neverwhere to watch. I'm going to be the most interesting, nerdiest person after all these flights! But for now, on to the links...

You guys, the Beastie Boys have been around for so. Long. This Adam Yauch tribute video (and related art project) is pretty bad ass.

In times of hardship and tragedy, we all want to say the right thing to the afflicted person. The "Ring Theory" is a handy guide for what you can say and to who.

Anthony Bourdain. Speechless.

Here's an interesting cocktail: The Tallulah, which contains coke, peanuts and whiskey.

More pics of adorable animals wearing clothes.

Paris: 1900/2013. I think I like 1900 better.

Calling Al Gore! This is how you get me into climate change: how it's hurting coffee producers.

What Ali Wore. A seriously dapper gent.

The world's rudest hand gestures. I have a few I could add to this list.

Sad Desk Lunch is sad.

George Plimpton on public speaking: "The more you sweat in advance, the less you’ll have to sweat once you appear on stage." So true George, I've done enough sweating on stage to know the feeling.

How To: Be The Most Tolerable Couple In The World. I'll add: not incessantly using your partner as a reason/excuse why you have to leave events early. That doesn't make me like them, or you, any more.

The Panel Crasher likes to crash DC panel discussions for the...free food. Those familiar with DC event culture know you can sustain yourself on panel food for weeks on end.

Last but not least, here's a song for your weekend. Cinerama's "Your Charms" is sweet and vulnerable and is the perfect soundtrack by which to have your morning cuppa. Have a lovely weekend, lovahs! [youtube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vD96H18YtC8]

Weekend Reads: Thug Kitchen & Flower Potlucks

2013-04-08-18-46-07.jpg

DC Spring Honestly, Mother Nature, what the eff is going on with you? It was gorgeous and warm and sunshiny all week. I even refrained from calling in sick to work from my roofdeck and get a good base tan. I told myself, "Friday! Friday, you can work and bask and lay like the Arizona sun-soaking lizard you are!" And then I woke up to this. Whatever. I'm not bitter.

This weekend should be fun though. If you're an American University student check out my panel at the Social Learning Summit: You Are What You Tweet! Other than that I plan on treating myself to some 2Amys, sunning myself (with plenty of 60 SPF and a big hat on) and celebrating my friend's nuptials. Love and sun - that's the theme for the weekend. Now, on to the links...

Thug Kitchen. It's a thing. Sugar snap peas, oh shit!

Mad Men: Then vs Now.

Choosing the right career - are you a promotion-focused person or a prevention-focused person.

Cup of Jo is doing a vocabulary challenge. I like to modify this game by asking my Twitter friend Rich for British slang I can use on the daily.

Hey Girl, don't forget to ask for a raise.

A flower potluck sounds SO FUN! Related: this is how I know I'm getting older. But, clearly, there would be pink champagne involved.

Hilarious: How Animals Eat Their Food.

Guys. Guys! Come on! Pomegranate seeds DO NOT GO IN GUACAMOLE! Shit.

Subways of North America. I want this as a print.

One of our bad ass photographers at work has a fabulous project called All Thrifty States. She's on an east coast road trip documenting the thrift stores of America. Follow the #allthriftystates journey on Twitter, Instagram and like her Facebook page for updates on the project.

And of course: 5 ways to update thrift store art.

Ladies everywhere will squeeee for this one: Hukkster, an online sale tracker and alert system. Sorry bank account :(

3 Ways You Should Never Start An Online Comment. That is all.

If DC Metro ad campaigns told the truth.

Have a wonderful weekend lovahs! When you're sipping your cup of joe, remember these 15 things...

Weekend Reads: Faces On Buildings & A Song For Game Of Thrones Fans

easter-treats.jpg

Easter Treats Calgon. Take me away. Please! I've officially burnt myself out with far too much fun. All that homebody time must have been cosmic preparation for two weeks of delicious food and drink, amazing time with friends and late night conversations. Yeah, I know. Me and my first world problems. At some point I had to start making fun of myself, so I started #bougietweets. Join in the fun. I mean, is this wine corked or is it just "terroir forward"? I guess we'll never know. On to the links!

This reminds me an awful lot of the Detroit photography exhibits I saw at the National Building Museum - people painting faces onto abandoned spaces! Creepy!

Someone turned an abandoned London public toilet into a coffee shop! It's quite gorgeous, though I hope there was liberal applications of Lysol on those urinal-turned-bar parts.

Illustrated quotations from The Oatmeal. Does he ever get it wrong? Um, no.

Shameless self promotion: ICYMI, I want to hug/punch the guy who invented the Long Island Iced Tea.

Y'know. What the fuck is this shit? The New York Times decided Yvonne Brill's obit should lead with:

"She made a mean beef stroganoff, followed her husband from job to job and took eight years off from work to raise three children. 'The world’s best mom,' her son Matthew said."

Instead of, oh, I don't know:

"She developed and patented the electrothermal hydrazine thruster – a rocket propulsion system used by communication satellites to maintain a geosynchronous orbit around Earth. Brill's EHT remains an industry standard to this day, and earned her the National Medal of Technology and Innovation in 2011."

The obit has been changed but women all over the internet will never forget. To Douglas Martin, author of the piece, I say this.

On to cuter things! Like, Maddie, an adorable rescue dog who stands on things! She has her own book now - and even an app! Instead of birds, I'll be putting a Maddie on it.

Want to be more creative? Here's some tactics from the pros. But let's get real, the old fashioned way: whiskey and Radiohead, produced the e*Trade baby. So let's not get too weird out there.

Artist Red Hong Yi is playing with her food on Instagram.

Important stuff for the ladies: the best eyebrow shape for your face. Also, 9 style details you think no one notices but they do. And they judge. With their judging eyes.

This is exactly why I use Evernote.

5 apps every urbanite should have. I'll add Zillow, Uber and Instapaper.

Since Game of Thrones started this week, I'll leave you with this fabulous song that embodies exactly how every fan of the books feels. Write Like The Wind (George R. R. Martin)!! And everyone have a fabulous weekend!

Weekend Reads: Art & Shiny Ponies Edition

March 29, 2013 Alejandra Owens
2013-03-25-09-33-09.jpg

Coffee & Sticky Bun I couldn't be more ready for the weekend. How about you guys? I was sick all last week (hence, no posts, sorry!) and this week, per usual got away from me. I find myself super envious of folks who get to blog all day (on their own blogs, that is) and share beautiful, interesting things. I continue the glorious struggle to find a way to blog all week long here, and elsewhere, while not completely overwhelming myself.

Well, no matter what we all do this weekend, let's resolve to make it fun, relaxing and beautiful! Now on to the links...

Where should you sit at those awkward dinner parties where you don't know anyone? This handy chart helps you choose!

Here's a map of every meteorite since 2,300 BCE. Yah. It was made by Javier de la Torre using data from the Meteoritical Society. (Eesh, there's a society for everything!)

You can ship anything nowadays! Even a couple pandas and a 100 kilos of bamboo! (Snacks, while flying, are very important. No one likes airplane food.)

I was reminded last night that when it comes to art, I'm more of a literal person. Which is probably why I like photography and these pretty ridiculous interpretations of common Facebook vernacular are...well...ridiculous.

Here's some #realtalk that will make you a better person. Also: ouch!? That shit kinda stings!

I have never liked the Today show, but New York Magazine's scathing profile of Matt Lauer made me like it even less.

What do you think of unconditional love? And what if I told you there's a woman out there who unconditionally loves...Lil' Wayne?

In the future thuggish union types will rig Uber's rating system. But are we ready for a wave of data Darwinism?

While I might like literal art, quirky art installations always get my attention. Like putting multicolor, glowing bulbs on a river! Or covering an entire village in optical illusions! (If you turn your head to the left, squint and hop up and down...)

Another New York Magazine zinger on the parties we should have instead of weddings reminds me of the Sex and the City episode with the baby shower and the case of the missing Manolos.

Hey, speaking of shoes, here's J. Crew's Jenna Lyons talking about "Shiny Ponies." That's J. Crew slang for "really awesome shoes."

Have a great weekend, homies!

Weekend Reads: Literary Shock Edition

March 15, 2013 Alejandra Owens
parc-de-guell.jpg

Parc De Guell, Spain "The year I turned ninety, I wanted to give myself the gift of a night of wild love with an adolescent virgin."

Oh you read that right! It's one of the 25 craziest opening lines from awesome books. And just so you know, that's from Memories of My Melancholy Whores by Gabriel García Márquez. It's a great, short, read so check it out!

Pictures of Hipsters Taking Pictures of Food. That is all.

What should you say when an interviewer asks you "So, do you have any questions for me?" Five great answers that will make you look smart AND sassy (a bonus).

In relationships, are you the flower or the gardener? The lover or the beloved? I'm a flower. This is a surprise to no one.

I've already talked about how important sleep is to #GSD. But now a study from Duke says not only are women grumpier than men when we wake up, but "females need far more sleep than men and suffer more mentally and physically if forced to go without it." To this I say: duh. But thanks for giving me science to fall back on when I just want to sleep!

My friend Allison and her gorgeous fiance were featured on Apartment Therapy for having a swoon-worthy apartment. I wish I had half their DIY spirit.

New mantra? Good things come to those who wait. Or those who are willing to get up and get shit done.

In nerdy news, a dad hacks Donkey Kong so his daughter can play as Pauline and save Mario.

This Star Wars soundboard lets you mash up your favorite lines and sounds from all the characters. Ewok sounds FTW!

Everyone is asking what to use now that Google Reader is dying. There's a ton of lists out there, and even a petition if you want to go all activist on 'em. I'm trying out what seems to be the two most popular options right now and will report back in a couple weeks! Stay tuned!

And last but not least, on the heels of SXSW - things people don't say at social media conferences! [youtube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zc9zIGF8rSU]

Weekend Reads: Mellow and Leaning In Edition

March 8, 2013 Alejandra Owens
rehoboth-beach-2013.jpg

Rehoboth Beach 2013 What a slow, quiet week it's been! Between our fake snow storm and most of my friends being out of town it's been mostly crickets, which has left me in a super mellow mood. I'm listening to some Melody Gardot at the coffee shop and nibbling on a sandwich. I networked the shit out of this week and connected with some truly cool people, had some great food and soon I'll settle in to cook and sip some vino. Not a bad and to the week, so let's get to the reads...

Sheryl Sandberg launched her Lean In initiative this week! Yay! Here's a few stories of women who leaned in to inspire you:

  • Marianne Cooper - when an authority figure gives you negative feedback or dismisses you
  • Libby Leffler -  taking the power seat at the table (or just not taking that seat along the wall)
  • Jill Abramson - she walked into an important meeting with a killer idea memo & got the job (she's not on the list but it's a great story)
  • Gloria Steinem - looking back on leaning in
  • Rachel Sklar - from lawyer to writer to nurturing a movement

Which brings me to a Harvard Business Review post called "Don't Wait For Gen Y Men To Come Around On Gender." A little disheartening but also reaffirmed for me that what Sheryl Sandberg has said about choosing a partner being the biggest career decision you make is 100% true. Finding someone who will support my work decisions - no matter what side of the traditional/working woman line they may fall on - is paramount.

People. I can't even handle this Harlem Shake madness! Even if it was "culturally misappropriated." But hey, Melissa Harris-Perry, thanks for showing me the real thing. At least the real thing is cool. Ish.

I have such a sweets craving going on this week! Things that need to be made: vanilla lemon swirl bars, condensed milk cake and greek yogurt souffle.

Not shocking, Anthony Bourdain's Reddit Ask Me Anything is a treasure trove of funny and oft-inappropriate quotes.

I'm in a super mellow mood today so I'll leave you with this video of dutch oven bread making from Kinfolk.

Weekend Reads: SXSW Edition

March 1, 2013 Alejandra Owens
2013-02-18-12-04-37.jpg

The Mix At SXSW - Wired Magazine In my professional life, everyone's getting ready for SXSW to start next week. I won't be going this year, but this graphic from Wired is just freakin' spot. On. Quotation marks and all. Don't worry techy/Twitter/bloggy friends - I won't be muting you from my streams. I'll just be annoyingly tweeting snark back at you. #AllThosePanelsKindaSuck. Anyway...on to the weekend reads:

Cool job alert: New York Magazine is hiring an Associate Manager of Social Media. Jump on it young ones. Jump on it.

Did you know that Calvin Klein used to leave a Pantone chip for his chef to indicate what color his coffee should be? If I ever get that coffee cabana boy I've been jonesin' for, I'll be using this #protip.

Remember last week when I said work/life balance is hooey? The lovely, and spot-on, Morra Aarons-Mele touches on the "having it all" falsity, but focuses on a conversation about compromise...with ourselves. I seriously feel a #GSD post coming about this topic.

Charles Bukowski is a beautiful poet. Someone near and dear to me told me about Bluebird. It pretty much describes how I feel about matters of the heart right now. Bonus: Tom Waits recites The Laughing Heart, also by Bukowski.

Dave Weigel is best known for his whip smart political reporting and hilarious, deadpan tweets. And his take on the Oscars, per usual, had me snorting. But what I found touching was the somewhat buried line about his own struggle with depression. Also, he thinks baseball is boring. Amen, and preach!

By now, most of you have probably seen this touching story of a basketball coach putting the team's manager in the season-ending game...and the character defining act that happened at the end of it. Grab a tissue box, you're gonna need the whole thing.

GQ's Make It Stop list from last week is hilarious, and just what you need after watching that basketball video.

ICYMI: I did a two part #GSD this week. Part one gets you all set up on social media and following blogs. Part two establishes a routine for actually using that set up.

Have a great weekend, y'all!
